一、課程目標Course objectives
Cultural heritage in Southeast Asia is a dynamic field situated at the intersection of politics, law, diplomacy, and society. This doctoral seminar examines the institutions, policies, and governance frameworks that shape how cultural heritage is defined, protected, managed, and contested across the region. Drawing on interdisciplinary perspectives—including political science, anthropology, legal studies, and international relations—students will critically engage with global, regional, and national dimensions of heritage governance. The course explores key themes including UNESCO's world heritage regime, ASEAN cultural cooperation mechanisms, national heritage legislation, indigenous peoples' rights, religious and intangible heritage, tourism and commodification, and the politics of memory and identity. Students will develop advanced analytical skills to examine how state and non-state actors negotiate heritage in postcolonial and contemporary Southeast Asian contexts. By the end of this course, students will be able to: 1. Critically evaluate theoretical and conceptual frameworks in heritage studies 2. Analyze multilevel governance structures for cultural heritage management in Southeast Asia 3. Situate Southeast Asian heritage issues within broader global heritage regimes and international norms 4. Conduct original doctoral-level research and produce a scholarly paper on a topic of their choice
