一、課程目標Course objectives

This course introduces students to a selection of twentieth century and contemporary short stories. Through close reading, class discussion, oral presentations, and writing workshops, students will learn to analyze key elements of short stories, including narrative perspective, characterization, symbolism, atmosphere, gender politics, modernist techniques, and the formal features of speculative writing.

The course also emphasizes the relationship between literary texts and broader social and ethical issues. Students will examine how short stories engage with questions of modernity, domesticity, social discipline, women’s experiences, loneliness and alienation, ethical choice, and human/nonhuman relations. In the final weeks of the semester, students will develop their own term paper topics through a proposal workshop and a revised proposal conference, in which they will refine their research questions, thesis statements, textual evidence, and writing plans through peer review.

By the end of the semester, students are expected to strengthen their English literary reading skills, critical thinking, oral communication, and textual analysis, while developing the ability to formulate, revise, and present their own interpretations in a clear and organized manner.

Oral Presentation: Students will present on an assigned text or excerpt, with particular attention to the ways in which literary works engage with contemporary ethical issues.

Term Paper Project: Students are expected to review peer feedback, refine their thesis statement and outline, strengthen their textual analysis, and submit the final paper by the designated deadline.

1. This course is taught in Chinese. It is not open for auditing.
2. NO taking photos, videos, or making audio recordings during class sessions.
3. Five absences will result in a final grade of zero.
