一、課程目標Course objectives

本課程是設計給大學部學生的研究裝備課程，目標在於提升批判性閱讀與寫作能力。本課程提供全英文的閱讀材料以及寫作練習，幫助學生建立學術研究的基礎能力。具體而言，本課程透過以下四種學術寫作的格式，培養學生的英文寫作能力與技巧：（一）摘要（二）附註釋的參考書目（三）文獻回顧（四）研究計畫。本課程適合任何對社會科學有興趣的學生修習，尤其是有志於申請社會科學研究所的學生。
This is a research method course for undergraduate students to enhance critical reading and writing. This course offers reading materials and writing lessons in English only. Specifically, this course offers training to complete the following academic tasks: how to write (a) a summary, (b) an annotated bibliography, (c) a literature review, and (d) a research proposal. Any student interested in conducting research in social sciences is welcome, but those who are interested in pursuing advanced degrees are especially suitable candidates to take this course.

三、授課方式Teaching approach

本課程為討論課(seminar)，高度要求學生投入時間閱讀與寫作。每位同學都必須於課前完成指定閱讀進度，按周完成寫作練習，並於課堂上積極參與討論。請修課學生每週預留至少六小時投入本課程，包括：兩個小時上課，兩個小時閱讀指定文本，以及至少兩個小時寫作。本課程對於英文程度無預先要求，但由於時間有限，課堂上將完全專注於透過英文訓練思辨能力，不會花時間說明實質概念。
 
This is a reading- and writing-intensive seminar. All students are expected to complete weekly reading and writing assignments before class, and actively participate in class discussion. Students should expect to invest at least six hours of work every week, including two hours in class, two hours for readings, and at least two hours on assignments. Please note that there is no prerequisite nor English proficiency requirement for this course, but the instructor will not spend time on translating or explaining substantive concepts in the reading. The course will focus on developing critical thinking through materials in English.

四、評量方式Grading criteria:

1)	出席（10%）：每堂課簽到，缺席一次扣一分，扣完為止。請假一次以內仍可以以全勤計分。 
2)	寫作練習（40%）：前四次寫作作業為寫作練習，每次10%。每次寫作練習內容不同，詳細內容於課上說明。
3)	附註釋的參考書目（25%）
4)	研究計畫（25%）

Grading and Assignments 
1)	Attendance (10%): students are expected to attend all classes. Missing one class will lose one point. With the instructor’s permission, students may miss one class for legitimate reasons, such as sick leave. 
2)	Writing assignments (40%): Assignments #1, #2, #3, and #4 will account for 10 points each. Each assignment has different requirements according to the weekly topic—more details in class.
3)	Annotated bibliography (25%)

七、彈性教學

獨立研究。學生必須在課堂外自行使用圖書資源搜尋學術資料，整理文獻，並與教師會面。具體工作包括：第九週，需自行設定研究主題，大量瀏覽相關文獻（20篇以上），篩選出6-12篇學術發表品，並閱讀摘要、導論與結論，與教師交換意見；並於課後再進行一次文獻搜尋、瀏覽、篩檢。第14週，撰寫研究提案並與教師單獨會晤。
Students are expected to conduct independent research outside the classroom. Independent research includes searching for 6 to 12 scholarly publications, reviewing their abstracts, introductions and conclusions, and selecting works most related to the student’s research interest. The instructor will arrange one-on-one meetings and provide feedback.
