一、課程目標Course objectives

Seminars in chemistry provide the fastest and most pleasant way of broadening one’s knowledge and perspective in their chosen field. This seminar course is designed to enhance the student’s English skills for communicating scientific results. Students can gain this communication skill through asking questions, examining how others communicate scientific ideas, and practicing presentations. 


To achieve these objectives: 
1. Oral presentation
Students are required to give one talk on their research projects and one literature talk related to their chosen field.
 
2. Ask questions for each seminar talk 
In order to best assist students in improving their seminar presentation skills, each student presenter will be asked questions by other enrolled students. Each student need to ask at least 5 questions in this seminar course.

3. In-depth summary report on the research talk
Student will need to write a final report on their research talk. The report should include the answer to the following questions. 
a. What is the general scientific problem or research question that the student presenter is
addressing?
b. Does the speaker present a hypothesis or potential solution to the problem? If so, what does this hypothesis/solution entail?
c. Briefly describe the methodology employed by the presenter to test the hypothesis or solve the problem. If several methods are used, list some of the main ones used and describe one
of them.
d. Summarize one significant result discussed in the talk and its potential impact on science or our understanding of that field

Each student needs to ask at least 3 questions throughout this course, and is encouraged to discuss all the topics with the instructor and the other students.
