一、課程目標Course objectives
This course focuses on the musical culture of Indonesian Gamelan, with a specific emphasis on the profound cultural intersections between Southeast Asian traditional music, religious beliefs, and ritual practices. It explores the historical evolution and distinct musical characteristics of Gamelan instrumentation. As one of the most significant and ancient indigenous musical traditions in Southeast Asia, Gamelan emerged as a unique artistic form in Indonesia even before the arrival of Indic cultural influences, with ensembles from Bali and Java being the most renowned globally. The university’s instrument collection primarily features the Balinese Gamelan Angklung. This course prioritizes "praxis" and hands-on performance; students do not need prior musical literacy or a background in music theory. Through individualized instruction and practical ensemble rehearsals, students will acquire fundamental performance techniques and a structural understanding of Gamelan music. By participating in collective music-making and dance performances, students will cultivate a respectful attitude toward cultural diversity and gain a deeper comprehension of Gamelan art within the context of Indonesian social life, encompassing its humanistic elements, ritual significance, and multifaceted musical aesthetics.
