Course Description
	The course assumes that reading and writing, though obviously two very different activities, are part of the same process that enables us to learn and grow intellectually and empathically. Our writing informs our reading, and vice versa. More importantly, how we read helps shape the content of our writing. Thus, the course places an emphasis on developing critical analytical skills in both reading and writing and works toward the goal of enabling students to read, think, and write critically.
	To this end, this semester we will read a variety of texts organized into thematic units, as indicated in the course schedule below. These readings—most of which are essays, book reviews, and film reviews—also introduce students to current events and to American literature, culture, and politics, both contemporary and historical.	
	Writing assignments include weekly one-sentence thesis statements and three major assignments (approximately 300 words or more) on specific topics. These exercises are designed to help you build your analytical reading abilities and writing skills, thereby fulfilling the Core A requirement for developing language-learning proficiency. In addition, you will take weekly grammar quizzes, which are designed to provide extra reading practice, and you will participate in peer reviews of your classmates’ drafts.
	All writing assignments, submitted to my university e-mail account (hjwang@ncnu.edu.tw), should be typed, double-spaced, and formatted in 12-point Times New Roman. Late papers will be penalized by a loss of half a letter grade.
	Last but not least, although this is a writing course, you are expected to read the assigned texts carefully and to learn from their style, syntax, and rhetorical strategies, in addition to engaging with the issues raised by the readings.

Your Writing Log:
Your writing log is designed to show how your ideas develop over time. You may use ChatGPT or other AI platforms to support your writing, but you must be transparent about how you use them. Your writing log should include:

1. Your own initial ideas or early draft
2. Your dialogue with ChatGPT or another AI platform (including the prompts you used and the AI’s responses)
3. A brief explanation of how you revised your work and how you chose to use, adapt, or reject the AI’s suggestions
Remember: AI tools are allowed in this course, but they must be clearly acknowledged and documented as part of your writing process.
