一、課程目標Course objectives

This course introduces students to early Western literature through Greek and Roman mythology, Homeric epic, Greek tragedy, and ancient literary theory. Readings include selected chapters from Edith Hamilton’s Mythology, Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey, Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex, Euripides’ Medea, and selected writings by Plato and Aristotle. Through these texts, students will explore key themes such as divine power, human limitation, heroism, rage, war, homecoming, hospitality, desire, transformation, mortality, and the cultural significance of poetry and tragedy. The course aims to help students understand how classical literature shaped the later development of Western literary traditions.

1. This course is taught in Chinese. It is not open for auditing.
2. Taking photos, videos, or making audio recordings is not allowed during class sessions.
3. Five absences without proper reasons will result in a final grade of zero.
